How to pack fragile items for a house move

Fragile packing is not simply a matter of adding more bubble wrap. The packing method should match the item: glass needs separation, electronics need protection from impact and moisture, and large surfaces need rigid protection against flexing and rubbing.

Glassware and crockery

Wrap each piece individually and use dividers where appropriate. Plates should not be allowed to knock against each other. Fill voids so items cannot move freely inside the carton, but do not compress delicate pieces.

Televisions and monitors

Keep the original box if it is still structurally sound. Otherwise use suitable protective material and ensure the screen is protected from direct pressure. Photograph the screen while it is working before packing if it is a high-value item.

Mirrors and framed artwork

Protect corners first, then use surface protection and a rigid outer layer where appropriate. Clearly identify the package as fragile. Large flat pieces should not be packed where heavy cartons can press directly against them.

Furniture with glass or polished surfaces

Tables, cabinets and beds often combine multiple materials. Glass tops should be separated from frames when practical. Polished surfaces need protection from abrasion, while hardware should be bagged and labelled rather than left loose.

Electronics and documents

Keep laptops, hard drives, passports and important records with you whenever practical. For office moves, create an inventory for IT equipment and label cables so reinstallation is faster.

Kitchen and decorative items

Group similar materials rather than mixing very heavy objects with delicate pieces. Use appropriate cushioning and fill empty spaces. Do not assume that writing “FRAGILE” on a carton replaces correct internal packing.

Fragile packing on moving day

Tell the crew about items with existing cracks, loose parts or unusual construction before packing. A packing list and pre-move photographs can make the condition and inventory easier to understand later.

What customers should do before fragile packing

Remove batteries, liquids and loose accessories from electronics where appropriate. Keep original accessories labelled. Do not put valuable jewellery, passports, cash or irreplaceable personal records into moving cartons. Those should remain under your personal control.
