What happens in a pre-move survey for a house move?

A pre-move survey is a planning exercise. It helps the mover understand what is being moved and how the crew will physically complete the job. It can be done in person or, for suitable moves, through detailed photos/video and a structured inventory discussion.

Inventory comes first

The survey should identify the broad inventory: beds, sofas, dining tables, wardrobes, appliances, cartons, electronics and unusual bulky items. The goal is not to count every spoon; it is to understand volume, handling and labour requirements.

Access at pickup

Tell the surveyor the floor, lift size, staircase width, building entrance, parking distance and any society restrictions. Independent houses may have different access issues from high-rise apartments.

Access at delivery

The destination needs the same attention. A truck that can reach the old home may not be able to reach the new building entrance. Mention narrow lanes, basement access, service lifts, tower restrictions and unloading windows.

Packing level

Decide what is being professionally packed and what you will pack yourself. The packing scope influences both labour and material requirements. Fragile or high-value items should be discussed individually.

Vehicle planning

For intercity moves, the inventory and route help determine the appropriate vehicle or load arrangement. Full-load and part-load options have different planning considerations. The final vehicle plan can depend on the confirmed inventory and schedule.

Special handling

Large safes, gym equipment, fragile glass, pianos, servers, industrial equipment and unusually heavy objects should be disclosed before booking. Specialist equipment or separate handling may be required.

What the survey should produce

A useful survey should lead to a clear quotation or scope summary, not just a verbal price. Keep the quotation and any agreed exclusions so there is a shared reference before moving day.

Start with the moving quotation guide, then review our household shifting service or office shifting service depending on your move.

Virtual survey vs physical survey

A video or photo-based survey can work well for a straightforward apartment move when the inventory is easy to show. A physical survey may be more useful for villas, offices, warehouses, large furniture, unusual access or high-volume moves. The right method depends on the complexity of the job.

If the survey is remote, show the entrance, staircase/lift, parking approach, each room, lofts, storage areas and large appliances rather than only showing the main furniture.
